Services

Domestic Violence Legal Service is a free legal service for persons who have experienced or are at risk of domestic or family violence in Darwin and the greater Darwin region.

Legal advice and information

Advice on applying for a domestic violence order, the process for getting a DVO or changing a DVO, undertakings and warnings letters, and on Police orders.

Legal representation and advocacy

For eligible clients, we can work with you to make an application for a DVO, talk to the Court and assist in negotiations.

Police DVOs

Advice and assistance for protected persons in Police DVOs. This is when the Police put an immediate DVO on someone or help make a DVO on behalf of someone.

Duty service

We provide a duty service at the Darwin Local Court on domestic and family violence days (currently Tuesday and Friday). This means a free lawyer will be present at court on those days, that may be able to provide advice and/or representation.

Non-legal and referral services

We have a dedicated Safety and Wellbeing Coordinator for non-legal support, help and referrals for women and children experiencing domestic violence. This includes help organising safe crisis accommodation, safety planning, problems with Centrelink, financial worries, Territory Families and other issues.

Information and advocacy

Provision of information about forms and court processes, and advocacy on matters linked with domestic and family violence like support with Territory Housing, Centrelink and Territory Families.

Covid-19 Legal Services Program

During the financial year 2020-2021 we have been able to employ an additional part-time solicitor through a grant from the Northern Territory Government.
